For many people, the winter season can mean their skin becomes dry, irritated and dull. And that’s just people with normal skin. If you suffer from severe dryness or a skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, keeping the skin moisturised is incredibly important. As someone who suffers from psoriasis and has black skin (naturally becomes drier and dull easier and quicker than other skin tones), regular use of a lotion is must. My normal body lotion was Aveeno, but was recently swapped it to Epimax Oatmeal Cream, which was prescribed by my GP.
Why am I using this?
Aveeno as a lotion works for me. It originally was prescribed years ago when no other product could moisturise and balance out the skin on my face. This did, and it tends to be my everyday body moisturiser and facial moisturiser too. When I could no longer get this on prescription, and the size wasn’t available from the high street, I asked my GP for an alternative. This was what was recommended.
What is this?
Epimax Oatmeal Cream is a light but moisturising lotion which can be used from top to toe daily. Ideal for people with very dry skin and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Soothing, moisturising and anti-inflammatory ingredients are included e.g colloidal oatmeal. This doesn’t contain things that could irritate the skin such as fragrance or colouring, so ideal for sensitive skin.
Packaging
Epimax looks like it’s mayonnaise in the plastic bottle it’s housed in. There is nothing attractive about this, very plain and looks like something you would buy from a chemist. But it’s practical and easy to dispense the product.
Consistency & Fragrance
Although this is called a cream, this is more like a lotion. Off white in colour, liquid in texture but not runny. It has an almost emollient look to it but not quite. No fragrance to this as it’s fragrance free. But it does have that typical scent to it which many fragrance free products have.
On the skin
I don’t need to use much of this, but I’m deliberately heavy handed with the amount I apply to my body. It’s cooling on the skin, light weight and easy to rub in even when I do use too much. It has the smallest slip to it but it feels like a lotion and doesn’t leave the skin looking or feeling oily. In fact, it makes the skin look moisturised but in a natural way and makes my skin feel comfortable, hydrated and less dry with it.
Is this similar to Aveeno?
Epimax is similar to Aveeno in every way. Ingredients list is similar, the look and feel of this on the skin is similar, which makes this a great alternative. Although the packaging of Epimax look wise is quite bland, on a practical level its better than Aveeno’s. I’ve used one bottle of this so far. I can get more out of the bottle if needed, ALL of the lotion has been used with none sticking inside the bottle. And an important point, I can see when this is running low (it’s transparent) so will never be caught with too little left or none at all.
Recommended?
Definitely! It’s a good all round body lotion, and even facial cream for those who need to put a little more care and moisture into their skin than those with ‘normal’ skin. It’s nice to see there isn’t just one product on the market which has the same properties and similar ingredients to Aveeno. It does seem a shame though this isn’t available anywhere and everywhere, but one to look for in your local chemist or request (if needed) through a GP.
