Hay fever. It’s evil! I’ve always had sympathy for hay fever sufferers. But when I started to suffer from it myself I understood how bad it really was. I’ve seen so many people buying hay fever tablets recently it’s obvious the season has definitely landed. I’ve found when I’m in the throws of it it causes issues with my skin. So how do I change my skin care routine to adapt to dealing with it?
It’s all about the eyes – Eye Creams/Gels & Serums
Some people use products for their under eyes, some don’t. Personally I’m pro eye creams, gels and serums. I ALWAYS use a product morning and night under my eyes, even more so when I suffer from hay fever. Rubbing and itching eyes makes them very dry. And as long as my under eyes can tolerate an eye product, it’s getting put on! Keeping this area hydrated makes them feel more comfortable, less painful and they look better too! So if you normally skip this part of a skincare routine, maybe reconsider.
Change textures
Let’s take eye creams as an example. I’ve found an eye gel to be more cooling and give me immediate relief compared to an eye cream. So changing textures that not only give relief but are lighter on areas that are already sore and sensitive could be helpful. This also goes with your cleansers. If your skin type is happy with the switch up, think about cleansers that will be more comforting and soothing e.g hot cloth cleansers, balms etc.
Keep products in the fridge
Unless the packaging and direction of use say no, put your products in the fridge! Toners, facial mists, eye products, those type of things are like Christmas when applied straight from the cold.
Keep moisturising
Sneezing, constant wiping of the nose and face. Around the sides of my nose and cheeks and mouth can really dry out so I don’t neglect moisturising. If needed, I will moisturise more than twice a day if my skin is super dry. And if needed, layer different products to give me the moisture factor my skin is missing.
Less is more with fragrance
My nose can be super sensitive when it comes to fragrance during hay fever season. So using products that are subtle in fragrance or non fragranced makes my life much easier. Not only do scents make me feel weird they can give me headaches too, so less is more.
Soft & gentle with a face cloth
I use a face cloth every time I cleanse my face. And if you do, be gentle with it and don’t use it to rub and buff your face, it’s not a car! If the face is already sensitive and delicate, pat. Also if possible go for a thicker, softer face cloth which will be softer and kinder on the skin.
These are just a few little tricks I use if my face wants to rebel during Spring and/or Summer. Not rocket science, but simple steps can be the best and easiest to incorporate if needed. May the force of antihistamines be with you all hay fever sufferers!
