Finding the right body care products for me is easier than skincare. Firstly, it’s affordable. As an example, you can get great body lotions/moisturisers/butters that moisturise the skin without blowing the bank. And price doesn’t always reflect quality, as many I’ve used in the past have been brilliant buys at great prices. And I’ve found this to be the same with body scrubs as well. So when I spotted Dr Organic’s Shea Butter Body Scrub for 99p in Home Bargains there was no question I wouldn’t buy it!
Why did I buy this?
I know of the Dr Organic’s range from Holland and Barratt. How much these products costs is NOT 99p! I’ve used some of this brand many years ago and I enjoyed it. And the idea this was a Shea Butter based body scrub was very appealing.
What is this?
A Shea Butter based body scrub that is supposed to smooth, nourish and condition the skin. Including ingredients such as aloe vera juice, sweet almond oil, coconut oil and much more, this should give the skin on the body a pampering treat.
Packaging
200ml of scrub comes in a plastic flip top lid. The labelling (an illustration I’m assuming of the Shea nut) does look a bit on the dated side and not at all modern. But it does give off the vibe of natural ingredients, wholesome ingredients etc. I do like this being in a tube rather than a pot because it’s much more hygienic and easier to get the required amount of product out to use.
Texture & Consistency
Firstly, let’s talk about the colour. It’s a light beige tone. It should make me like it but I look at the colour of it and go ummm, not in a good way. When this is squeezed out of the tube it looks like a very rich body lotion. It looks smooth in texture but it isn’t. There’s actually very tiny grains in this that appear to be white, with the occasional irregular brown pieces that look like broken up shell.
Fragrance
I don’t hate how this smells but I don’t love it either. It kind of makes me think of a wholewheat biscuit or cereal with a dash of milk and a touch of floral. Very odd scent but not heavy, and one as you can read I’m struggling to describe!
In Use
Normally with scrubs the packaging says you should apply to damp skin. This didn’t. It just said to massage over the skin while in the shower or bath once or twice a week. So in the shower I made sure my body was damp and applied this and I knew immediately it was wrong. There was no exfoliating action happening, no physical buffing of the skin, nothing! So after applying this to one arm I stopped and tried again on another occasion, this time on dry skin.
Applying this on dry skin was like putting a body lotion on. You could see it on the skin, and by the time I went to another body part it had vanished! Totally sunk in! I felt a teeny amount of exfoliating particles in this but it was barely there, another reason why this made me think of a body lotion. So from a scrub aspect it failed.
Washing this off was easy. There was no foam, just a milky looking residue once water hit my skin and was easy to rinse off. I did find this irritated a sore section of my skin that has been itchy lately, but only on a small area of my body.
Once out of the shower I did feel and look at my skin and to be honest, it felt nice and smooth, and didn’t look dry. So it did succeed in part of what it promised.
Recommended?
If you want a traditional body scrub then it’s a simple no. I love body scrubs with ‘bits’ in it which is in an oil or cream because it gets rid of the dead skin, leaves it feeling smooth and moisturises it. This was something but not a scrub so disappointed I didn’t get the pampering experience I hoped for.
